Which states let notaries marry people

I know Florida notaries can perform weddings — did one in Tampa in 2019. Who else allows it, and any quirky rules you’ve run into?

Florida South Carolina, and Maine let notaries officiate — tiny club. Quirks: Maine bars marrying close family, and in FL you need a Florida-issued license; Alabama’s twist is no ceremony at all, just a notarized marriage certificate. Small add: Alabama switched in 2019 to a notarized marriage certificate — no ceremony — file it with the probate court within 30 days, so you’re just notarizing, not officiating… Maine also makes you return the license to the issuing clerk within 7 business days, which trips folks up. @mentormatrix8484 ever had FL couples show up with a non‑Florida license and get bounced?

In Texas, notaries can officiate weddings too, but you need to complete a specific training course first. I had a couple ask me about it once, and it was great to point them in the right direction! Have you encountered many couples looking to get married this way?
