Did you know? The true ancestors of modern notaries emerged from the Roman Empire. Many historians consider the first βnotaryβ to be Marcus Tullius Tiro, a secretary to the famous orator Cicero. Tiro developed a system of shorthand, known as notae Tironianae, to rapidly transcribe speeches, and these recorders eventually became known as notarii.
